the detective series revolving around Swedish police detective Martin Beck, and was written by Sjöwall and
Wahlöö and originally published as Mannen på balkongen in 1967.
  Plot
  
  Martin Beck and his
team realize that a pedosexual murderer may have been seen by an unidentified serial robber who was watching for prey in
the area, at the time. The pressure is turned up when more child murders begin to occur.
  
  
  
  The Laughing Policeman (1968), by Sjöwall
and Wahlöö, is the fourth police detective novel, in the ten-part Martin Beck series. Originally published in
Sweden in 1968 as Den skrattande polisen, it is the first novel in the series to criticize the shortcomings of the
Swedish welfare state.[citation needed] In 1971, The Laughing Policeman earned a 'Best Novel' Edgar Award from the
Mystery Writers of America. The American police procedural film, The Laughing Policeman (1973) featuring Walter Matthau,
is a loose adaptation of the novel.
  
  Explanation of the title
  
  The novel's title, The
Laughing Policeman, derives from a 1922 song so titled. When Detective Beck receives the record as a Christmas gift from
his daughter, Ingrid, he does not think it funny; his first laugh comes when the dead Det. Åke Stenström is
vindicated.
  Plot
  
  A gunman shoots the passengers of a public transport bus with a sub-machine gun;
he kills eight people (including Detective Åke Stenström), and wounds one. Detective Beck and his team suspect
the mass-murder is to disguise the murder of Detective Stenström, who was spending his free time investigating the
sixteen-year-old murder of a Portuguese prostitute. Before that we see the technicality of the story , where beck tries
and removes all the cover from the murder at the bus.
  
  
  
  The Fire Engine That Disappeared (Brandbilen som försvann, 1969) is the fifth in the
'Martin Beck' detective series by Sjöwall and Wahlöö.
  Plot
  
  A house fire, which kills
three people, was about to be written off as the result of a tenant's gas suicide when a forensics officer discovers a
firebomb in the rubble that would have certainly killed the tenant had he not killed himself. Beck and his team launch a
manhunt for the tenant's partner-in-crime, but are perplexed when the partner-in-crime is found dead at the bottom of

Savoy (Polis, polis, potatismos! literally Police, Police, Mashed Potatoes!) is a Swedish crime novel and the sixth book
out of ten in the 'Martin Beck' detective series by Sjöwall and Wahlöö revolving around police detective Martin

  Title
  
  "Murder at the Savoy" is the English title of the novel. The Swedish title of
the book, meaning "Police, police, mashed potatoes", is explained in a scene where Gunvald Larsson is telling off the
miserably lazy policemen Kristiansson and Kvant. The two policemen had, instead of obeying their orders to arrest a
suspect at Arlanda Airport, been arguing with a man whose 3-year-old son had shouted "Police, police, mashed potatoes"
at the two policemen while they were eating Hot Dog with mashed potatoes at a grill bar. This refers to the common rhyme
"polis polis potatisgris" ("police, police, potato pig").

  Martin Beck has to search through
the high powered business man Viktor Palmgren's many enemies when the business man is shot in front of a dozen witnesses

Wahlöö from 1971 in the series revolving around police detective Martin Beck. One of Donald Knuth's favourite
novels, "one of Sjöwall and Wahlöö's brilliantly Swedish detective novels".

A senior policeman known for brutality is violently knifed while in his hospital bed. Within a 24 hour period, Martin
Beck searches through the policeman's many enemies for the killer, for whom the murder was only a precursor to a Charles
